James Jeffreys

James Jeffreys (1649–1689) was born in Acton, Denbighshire, and was educated at Jesus College, Oxford (1666; B.A. 1669; M.A. 1672; B.D. 1679; D.D. 1683).[1] He was appointed a canon of Canterbury (Stall IX) in 1682 and was vice-dean from 1685; he was Canon Treasurer for several years until his death.[2] He was instituted rector and perpetual vicar of Eastchurch in 1684 and also occupied the rectory of Chartham from 1686. He was a younger brother of the notorious Lord Chancellor Judge George Jeffreys.

Hasted reports that 'He gave to the library of Christ-church, in Canterbury, 20l. worth of books, to be taken out of his study; and to Jesus college, in Oxford, 20l. to be laid out in books for their library.' CCA-DCc-LA/2/1 is a list of the 61 titles selected, headed 'Books bequeath’d by Dr Jeffreys to the Library of Christ Church Canterbury & vallued by Dr Kay by consent'.[4] The list is priced and totalled at '£20–0–0'.
